THE SOUTHERN AFRICA CONFERENCE ON VOLUNTEER ACTION FOR DEVELOPMENT

The Southern Africa conference on volunteer action for development that held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 17th to 19th October, 2011 is the first ever Conference on Volunteer Action and Development in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region, which was organized by United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV) with its collaborating partner, Volunteer and Service Enquiry Southern Africa (VOSESA). The main objective of the conference was to convene strengthen support for volunteer action as a tool for regional integration and development in SADC, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The conference contributed to the worldwide celebration of the 10th anniversary of the United Nations International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10) in the SADC region Various volunteerism matters were discussed such as; the role of different forms of volunteer action in achieving regional development priorities, including efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic, promotes social and economic participation of youth, and foster peace and social cohesion within and between SADC countries.

Different participants from southern Africa attended the conference, including; representatives from member states; regional bodies; organizations involving volunteers in HIV/AIDS programmes, youth development, peace and social cohesion in the region; private sector; intergovernmental agencies; universities and student bodies.

The conference involved about 170 participants from approximately 23 countries in and out of the Africa include; Tanzania, South Africa, Ethiopia, Malawi, Germany, Mozambique, Mauritius, Norway, United State of America, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Egypt, United Kingdom, Botswana, Angola, Canada, Lesotho, Zambia, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Senegal, Nigeria and Swaziland.

Tanzania were represented by, Mr. Eliakim Mtawa, an officer-Ministry of Information, youth, Cultural and Sport, Stella Karegesya, a program officer -United Nation Tanzania (UNV), Imisa Masanjila, Nation Volunteer Coordinator-Volunteer Service Overseas Tanzania (VSO), Alfred O. Magehema, director-YTCP and Ben Mongi, Executive Director- UVIKIUTA.
